Following a public meeting in June, 2010, addressed by Liberal Judaism’s Chief Executive, Rabbi Danny Rich, the Wessex Liberal Jewish Community later affiliated to Liberal Judaism, a movement of some 10,000 Jews in 35 communities including in Edinburgh, Manchester, Dublin, the East and West Midlands, London and the Home Counties, Essex, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Brighton and Eastbourne.
Our Hebrew name is Adat Chaverim, meaning a Community of Friends. This is precisely what we aim to be: a sincere, egalitarian and inclusive Jewish community and not just a community of Jews. We have also recently secured a new hall for our services.
Wessex Liberal Jewish Community welcomes individuals, couples and families who consider themselves Jewish or wish to explore what ‘being Jewish’ means. The Community operates under the auspices of the Rabbinic Conference of Liberal Judaism. We are now also members of the Joint Jewish Burial Society and have our own burial ground.
The Wessex Liberal Jewish Community uses the Liberal Judaism’s Siddur Lev Chadash for services which are led by Rabbi Ariel Friedlander, our own members or by visiting Liberal rabbis. We usually have two Shabbat services per month.
